榮榮＆映里写真集『Love Songs ― 始まりの光』は、《Personal Letters》シリーズのなかから、二人が出会った1999年から2000年にかけて交わしていた初期の「写真の手紙」を収録した一冊です。町口覚氏の編集・デザインにより構成され、2026年4月に赤々舎より刊行されます。
《Personal Letters》は、1999年に出会った二人が、共同制作を始める以前に写真を通して交わしていた往復を、2022年以降にあらためてまとめたシリーズです。出会う以前、それぞれ孤独な時間を過ごしていた榮榮と映里は、出会いをきっかけに写真による交流を始めました。2000年、映里が初めて北京を訪れ、日本へ戻ってからは、そのやりとりはいっそう頻繁になっていきます。言葉による十分な意思疎通が難しい状況のなかで、写真そのものが手紙として交わされ、互いの考えや感情、信念を伝える大切な手段となりました。こうして生まれた写真の手紙は、二人の関係の始まりを記録するものとして、二十年以上にわたり大切に保管されてきました。
本シリーズは、2022年にパリのヨーロッパ写真美術館、2023年にニューヨークのICP（International Center of Photography）で展示され、多くの反響を呼びました。
本展は、《Personal Letters》シリーズを日本で初めて紹介するとともに、写真集『Love Songs ― 始まりの光』の刊行を記念して開催するものです。二人が実際に送り合っていたオリジナルの「写真の手紙」に加え、《Personal Letters》シリーズの作品を、作家本人による手焼きプリントで展示いたします。
RongRong&inri’s photobook “Love Songs ― First Light” brings together the earliest “photographic letters” exchanged between the two artists from 1999 to 2000, selected from the larger “Personal Letters” series. Edited and designed by Satoshi Machiguchi, the book will be published by AKAAKA Art Publishing, Inc. in April 2026.
“Personal Letters” is a series assembled from 2022 onward, based on the photographic exchanges that RongRong and inri shared before beginning their collaborative practice. Before meeting, each had spent periods of solitude. Their encounter in 1999 led them to begin communicating through photography. In 2000, after inri visited Beijing for the first time and returned to Japan, these exchanges became even more frequent. In a situation where verbal communication was limited, photography itself became a form of correspondence―an essential means of conveying their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. These photographic letters, recording the beginning of their relationship, have been carefully preserved for more than twenty years.
The series was exhibited at the European House of Photography in Paris in 2022 and at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York in 2023, where it received a strong response. This exhibition marks the first presentation of the “Personal Letters” series in Japan and is held to commemorate the publication of the photobook “Love Songs ― First Light.” In addition to the original “photographic letters” the two actually exchanged, works from the “Personal Letters” series will be exhibited as hand-printed prints made by the artists themselves.
